Give the gift of securities, get tax benefits

People signing paperwork

Donating stock or other marketable securities to ALS Canada provides significant philanthropic impact to further ALS research, advocacy, and supportive services that we provide to people living with ALS and their families every day.

When you make a gift of publicly traded securities, your taxable capital gain is eliminated.  In contrast, if you choose to sell appreciated securities during your lifetime, or if these assets are liquidated through your estate, tax must be paid on 50% of the capital gains on those securities.  Donating securities to a registered charity ALS Canada provides an opportunity to tax-efficient way to give.

Advantages of Gifting Securities

  • You will be issued a charitable tax receipt on the date the securities are received in ALS Canada’s brokerage account. The valuation will be based on the fair market value of the gift at the closing price on that date.
  • If your donation exceeds the amount eligible for a tax credit in the year your gift is made, the excess credit may be carried forward up to five years.
  • If you leave securities to ALS Canada through your Will, your estate will receive the same tax benefits. Gifts made through your Will can be claimed up to 100 percent of your net annual income in the year of death and the year preceding.
