These five words were first spoken by ALS patient and advocate, Pat Quinn, upon accepting a Webby Award for his part in creating the Ice Bucket Challenge. The social media phenomenon raised millions of dollars for charitable organizations dedicated to funding ALS research and support services. This type of investment gave hope to people and families living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
The Ice Bucket Challenge and Research
In Canada, the 2014 Ice Bucket Challenge resulted in an unprecedented investment of $20 million for the ALS Canada Research Program to help make ALS a treatable, not terminal disease. Because of investment in research, globally, there has been more progress in ALS research in the last five years than in the previous century. As a result, there are several clinical trials in the pipeline that could become the treatments of tomorrow. That is why we can’t afford to lose momentum. Not now. Not when the development of effective treatments is limited only because of the lack of funding needed to pursue research discovery.
This is why the time for investing in research is now. We can’t afford to wait five years. People affected by ALS need viable treatments now. We need to fuel the momentum to yield results and breakthroughs faster, and funding is the only way to build on what we already know. ALS Canada is 100% donor-funded and as a result, must carefully allocate funds in order to be able to deliver client services and equipment, to fund research and to advocate for health care services for those affected by this disease.
Every August until a cure means that in order for ALS research investment to continue, so too must your generous spirit. This August. Today. We invite you to renew your support and get involved. Choose how you want to be involved and stand with us to create a future without ALS.
How will you show your support?
