In October 2024, the Government of Ontario announced an investment of $13 million over three years to implement the recommendations of the Ontario Provincial ALS Program – a major step toward helping ensure people living with ALS have access to multi-disciplinary care, essential community services, and the assistive devices and mobility equipment they need, when they need it.

This investment was the result of years of advocacy and collaboration between the ALS Society of Canada (ALS Canada), the ALS Clinic at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, and the regional ALS Clinics in Ontario. It was made possible because the ALS community raised its voice, and the government responded.

Now, it’s time to acknowledge that leadership and reinforce the significance of this commitment for Ontarians affected by ALS.

That is why ALS Canada is launching a letter-writing tool you can use to send a letter to Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford and Minister of Health, Sylvia Jones, to express your gratitude, acknowledge their support of the Ontario Provincial ALS Program and help keep ALS on the province’s agenda.

Why it matters

The Ontario Provincial ALS Program will fund vital services aligned with the best practice model of care to provide better health outcomes for the 1,400+ Ontarians living with ALS and their families, supporting their independence, safety, and dignity while reducing stress on Ontario’s healthcare system by helping prevent unnecessary hospitalizations and emergency visits.

It also reflects what is possible when government, the healthcare system, and the ALS community work together to drive meaningful, lasting change.

As a community, we advocate for change when it is needed, and we show gratitude when meaningful action is taken. By sending a letter, we show that the ALS community is paying attention – that this investment matters and is appreciated. We will continue to collaborate to ensure the needs of people living with ALS remain a priority.
