Canadian research efforts have helped to advance treatment discoveries and shed light on the complex genetic, biological and environmental factors involved in ALS. We will continue to fund the most promising ALS research in Canada to accelerate progress toward reaching our collective vision of a world free of ALS.

Specialized training of MDs in both clinical care and research skills related to ALS is crucial to building better clinical infrastructure across Canada. The ALS Canada-Brain Canada Clinical Research Fellowship is designed to support the further training of a clinician for development of the skills necessary to be a specialist in ALS and to provide experience/training in clinical or fundamental research relevant to the field.
- One fellowship of up to $200,000 CAD total is available for up to two years.
- A one-year fellowship of $100,000 CAD may be requested provided appropriate justification is included.
- Funds may only be used as stipend/salary support, with the expectation that tuition funds are included within. A budget should be submitted to outline the requested support and where no tuition fees are involved appropriate justification for the request should be made.

ALS Canada Travel Awards
In addition to funding ALS research projects and initiatives, we aim to foster international collaboration and support Canada’s presence in the global ALS research community. Towards this goal, for nearly 15 years, ALS Canada has provided Travel Awards to support Canadian ALS researchers to attend and present their work at ALS conferences of international scope and significance.
Each Canadian lab or clinic is eligible to request one Travel Award per year, which provides up to $1,000 CAD to support a researcher or clinician in presenting their work at designated meetings.
Eligibility:
- Awards may support any presenting member of a lab or clinic, including clinic staff, but must be requested by the principal investigator or clinic head.
- Presentations may be oral or poster (proof of acceptance may be requested).
- Eligible conferences and meetings in 2026 include:
- TRICALS Masterclass (February 11 – 13; Amsterdam, Netherlands)
- ENCALS Meeting (June 24 – 26; Madrid, Spain)
- NEALS Meeting (October 27 – 30; Clearwater, Florida)
- International Symposium on ALS/MND (December 9 – 11; Amsterdam, Netherlands)
To request an award:
- Travel awards will be given on a first-come, first serve basis by e-mailing the ALS Canada Research Team (research@als.ca).
- A confirmation email from ALS Canada will be sent to acknowledge that a Travel Award has been reserved in your name.
- An award can be reserved at any time of the year, as long as the competition is open.
- Awards will be processed after the meeting’s completion upon submission of travel receipts and additional information.
Closed opportunities
ALS Canada-Brain Canada Discovery Grant Program
Discovery Grants are designed to support teams of multiple investigators and especially encourages multidisciplinary teams with individuals from outside the field who can combine their expertise in novel or innovative ways.
ALS Canada-Brain Canada Trainee Program
It is crucial that promising doctoral and post-doctoral trainees are nurtured in the early stages of their careers, so they might strive to promote discovery and advancement. Attracting the brightest minds to ALS research will contribute to a succession plan for the Canadian ALS research community and will nurture and support innovative ideas and compelling breakthroughs.
ALS Canada-Brain Canada Career Transition Award
The Career Transition Award has the long-term goal of developing the next generation of scientists across various disciplines within basic and clinical sciences, contributing to knowledge generation and translation in ALS. To fulfil this mission, ALS Canada and Brain Canada will support a talented young investigator to pursue advanced research and transition into a junior faculty position at a Canadian institution.
Meeting Sponsorships
The ALS Canada Research Program also accepts requests for sponsorship of meetings that will enhance the capabilities, knowledge, and collaboration of the Canadian ALS research community. This funding allows our research community to share knowledge on timely topics related to ALS and to actively respond to new ALS research discoveries that reflect the needs of our community.
These meetings may include those held in Canada, with a significant involvement of Canadian content or participants, as well as global ALS events where financial support is critical for execution or where ALS Canada’s support would demonstrate the organizations’ connectedness and collaboration toward a world free of ALS.
Sponsorship requests are reviewed and assessed by ALS Canada’s Scientific and Medical Advisory Council (SMAC).
In the past, we have proudly sponsored:
- The André-Delambre ALS Research Symposium
- The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Related Motor Neuron Diseases Gordon Research Conference
- The International Motoneuron Society (IMNS) Meeting
- Sponsorship to the plenary ALS speaker at the Annual Meeting for Manitoba Neuroscience Network
- The Phenotype and Biology of ALS Frontotemporal Spectrum Disorders Workshop
- The global ALS Clinical Trials Guidelines Workshop
- A Workshop on Guidance for Pre-Symptomatic Genetic ALS and FTD
