Donna and Mike at a race in the Yukon

Donna Bartel and Mike Pearson are nearing the finish line of a remarkable journey: participating in 18 triathlons, one in every province and territory across Canada. On September 7, they’ll be in London, Ontario, to take part in their 17th race, part of a coast-to-coast effort to raise awareness and funds for ALS.

Their motivation is deeply personal. Donna’s mother, Marilyn, was diagnosed with ALS 25 years ago. Since then, Donna and Mike have been dedicated to supporting people living with the disease and advocating for improved treatment options. “We’ve had lots of time to reflect on why we’re doing this,” Donna said. “It’s been hard at times, but we know it’s the right thing to do.”

From Newfoundland to the Yukon, and even to the tundra of Nunavut, they have met people who share a connection to ALS. “We speak to several people a day who have some connection with ALS. Often, tears, hugs, and stories are exchanged. It has been far more than we ever expected,” said Donna.

One of the most memorable moments came during their stop in Iqaluit. After a long day, the pair joined a trivia night at a local brewery where strangers quickly rallied behind them. “A room full of people who had just met us donated more than $500 on the spot,” said Donna. “Their generosity reminded us why it was so important to include every part of Canada in this journey.”

In Ontario, half of the funds raised in the province will support ALS Canada’s community-based services for people living with the disease, and the other half will be allocated toward research into new treatments.
