ALS is a devastating disease that can affect anyone at any time. Nearly 4,000 Canadians are living with ALS right now. That number may seem small, but every year, as many as 1,000 more people are diagnosed and another 1,000 lives are lost. ALS touches so many of us: our neighbours, our friends, and our families in communities across this beautiful country.

Together, we can make sure Canada leads the way with a National ALS Research Strategy that leaves no Canadian behind.

We should be proud of the ALS research already happening here in Canada. Our scientists, our clinics, and our community are among the strongest in the world. But there is still a missing piece. To turn that strength into progress for every Canadian living with ALS, we need a coordinated national strategy funded by the federal government that we can all be proud of.

Why Canada needs a National ALS Research Strategy

Without a coordinated plan, progress is slower and too many people living with ALS cannot access or benefit from the advances that research makes possible.

A National ALS Research Strategy would change that. It would:

  • Ensure no Canadian is left behind, whether they live in a city or a rural community.
  • Build on Canada’s strengths by connecting proven programs and expertise.
  • Accelerate progress across the full spectrum of research, from discovery to clinical trials.
  • Protect Canadian data sovereignty by keeping health data in Canada and ensuring its ethical use.

We already have the tools. What we need now is bold federal leadership to match the courage and determination of our community.

United in action

ALS Canada and the ALS community are calling on the federal government to invest $50 million over five years in the Canadian Collaboration to Cure ALS – a coordinated, made-in-Canada ALS Research Strategy.

With your support, we can transform the way ALS research is done in this country, making it faster, fairer, and more equitable so that no opportunity is missed and no person is left behind.
