Empowering post-secondary students affected by ALS in their educational goals while strengthening care and support of the ALS community

For the third year, the ALS Society of Canada (ALS Canada), together with the family and friends of Kevin Daly, is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2025 ALS Canada Kevin Daly Bursary. This $2,500 award supports a post-secondary student whose life has been impacted by ALS, continuing Kevin’s legacy of compassion and dedication to others.

Established in 2023 to honour Kevin, the bursary reflects his deep care for young people navigating the challenges of ALS within their families and offers tangible support to help them pursue their educational goals.

In November 2024, Kevin sadly passed away from ALS. Today, his wife Elena, daughters Erica and Allison, and a dedicated circle of supporters continue the bursary in his honour.

“ALS Canada is proud to honour Kevin Daly’s memory and continue his legacy by working with Elena and his family to support this meaningful initiative,” says Christopher Pon, Vice-President of Fund Development at ALS Canada. “When a parent is diagnosed with ALS, it can place an enormous emotional and financial strain on the entire family. The impact can be especially challenging for young people pursuing post-secondary education. The Kevin Daly Bursary helps ease that burden and supports students in moving forward with their goals, even during one of the most difficult times in their lives.”

The bursary is open to Canadian students accepted into or attending a post-secondary institution in Canada for the 2025–2026 academic year for undergraduate or post-graduate studies. Applicants must also demonstrate a close personal connection to ALS, whether through a parent, guardian, or relative currently living with the disease or lost to it.

“Kevin was very passionate about recognizing young adults who currently are, or previously have had to support a family member through their ALS journey,” says Elena Daly. “Through the generosity of family and friends, we are so honoured that we can continue the bursary in his memory.”

Applications for the 2025–2026 academic year are open as of Tuesday, May 13, 2025, and will close at midnight eastern time on June 17, 2025. The application form is available on the ALS Canada website. All applications will be anonymized and reviewed by a panel appointed by ALS Canada, including members of the ALS community and the Daly family.

The Kevin Daly Bursary Fund is sustained through the generosity of donors, with contributions managed by ALS Canada. Thanks to an outpouring of support, seven students across Canada have been awarded bursaries since it began in 2023. Donations supporting the fund are eligible for charitable tax receipts and can be made at kevindalybursary.com.
