Andrew Dundas lives in Whitby, Ontario, with his wife, Kim. Following his ALS diagnosis, the couple had to move away from their community and local support systems. Losing those vital connections took a heavy emotional toll on both of them. It also left Kim to carry the growing demands of caregiving alone.

Spouses and caregivers like Kim dedicate countless, round-the-clock hours to supporting their family members with ALS. They manage everything from complex medication schedules and breathing equipment to simple tasks like eating, dressing, and moving safely around the home

Our new Burden of ALS Study found that nearly half of caregivers report spending 30+ hours per week on caregiving activities.

That’s a major, unpaid workload comparable to a full-time job. With limited time and energy left, caregivers like Kim have no choice but to scale back at work, leading to an inevitable drop in their income. Some report a loss of roughly $22,000; for others, it can be much more.

This financial loss only adds to the emotional strain. On top of money worries, caregivers and family members must navigate major life decisions while facing uncertainty about what lies ahead.

It’s a lot to carry, and no caregiver or family should have to face it alone. If you agree, please add your name today. Every name added unlocks a $1 donation to ALS Canada, up to $5,000.

United, we can give caregivers like Kim the connections and resources they need to face high financial and emotional costs, one day at a time.
